Hilser, H., Cox, E., Moreau, C., Hiraldo, L., Draiby, A., Winks, L., … & Walworth, N. G. (2024). Localized governance of carbon dioxide removal in Small Island Developing States. Environmental Development, 49, 100942.

Our research with carbon dioxide removal start-up Vesta, explored public perspectives on climate change mitigation. For vulnerable island nations to successfully implement carbon removal projects, local communities must be involved in the planning and decision-making process. We found that giving residents a voice in these projects increases local buy-in and makes climate change mitigation strategies more effective. For climate solutions to work, they must be developed from the ground up, with local people leading the way.

Hilser, H., Hiraldo, L., Moreau, C., Draiby, A., Cox, E., Andrews, M. G., … & Walworth, N. G. (2024). Public engagement and collaboration for carbon dioxide removal: lessons from a project in the Dominican Republic. Frontiers in Climate, 6, 1290999.

Supporting the position paper above, we also documented the exploratory project in the Dominican Republic where Lestari developed a social science and community engagement framework. Our findings stress that public trust is essential for deploying CDR, covering diverse approaches from nature-based solutions to technology-based methods. We advocate for collaborative processes that involve scientists, policymakers, and communities to address uncertainties and ensure equitable outcomes, moving beyond technical aspects to consider the social, ethical, and political dimensions.

Hilser, H., Palohoen, R., Justinek, Z., Siwi, Y., Tasirin, J. S., & Bowkett, A. E. (2023). Cultivating care: Behaviourally informed conservation strategies to safeguard the future of the Sulawesi crested black macaque (Macaca nigra). International Journal of Primatology, 44(4), 764-790.

This open-access article explores behaviourally informed approaches to conserving the Critically Endangered Sulawesi crested black macaque (Macaca nigra) through the Selamatkan Yaki programme in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Co-authored by Lestari’s founder Harry Hilser, the study demonstrates how applying insights from psychology, sociology, and ethnography can enhance community engagement, shape conservation behaviours, and strengthen outcomes. It reflects the interdisciplinary, values-led ethos at the core of Lestari’s work, connecting ecological science with cultural understanding to foster more effective and inclusive conservation practice.
